New Long Term Contracts for Rodney District Council On 19 December 2008, Rodney District Council (RDC) awarded two long term Professional Services contracts to Projenz;
Projenz have been a preferred supplier of professional services to RDC over the last twelve years and are pleased to have this relationship formalised for the next five years. Following their internal re-organisation, the new Infrastructure Directorate of RDC embarked on a competitive procurement process in October 2008. The process opened with an invitation to the market to provide statements of interest. A total of forty-three local and international consulting organisations responded to RDC’s invitation, reflecting both the economic climate and the longevity and opportunity these contracts offered. For the six available packages, RDC then selected only two consultants to provide a full tender response for each package. Following an intensive tender period, Projenz were selected in first place for both of the tenders they entered into. Scoring highest attributes for both Asset Management and Programming and Transport and Property. A key to the Projenz success was their empathy and understanding for Rodney District , alignment with the core values of Council and in ‘making a positive difference’ for Rodney. The theme for both parties is ‘One Directorate, One Team, One Vision’, which encapsulates the totally collaborative approach that is necessary to provide Rodney District with the level of professional services they deserve. Projenz will also help make that positive difference by continuing their history of innovation and doing things better but in a practical New Zealand way. Projenz were pleased to include a number of successful local suppliers in their tenders as sub-consultants in specialty areas such as architecture and planning. Projenz have also teamed with international consultants GHD in their Asset Management and Programming Contract where they are able to provide expertise in the three waters (potable water, stormwater and wastewater), parks and coastal disciplines. To align with the Rodney Vision and promote a fresh approach from 2009, Projenz and GHD have re-branded their services under the new banner of

New Airport 'gateway to Fiordland'
|
![]() |
Te Anau's new $7.1 million airport would provide a gateway for tourists into Fiordland and Southland, Southland Mayor Frana Cardno said.
Cutting down travel time would make it more convenient for travellers and entice more into the region, she said. "Within a couple of hours down the road you're in Milford or Doubtful Sound, you're right there. I guess if you're a tourist visting areas you look at the map for the nearest airport and this is it." The building of the airport was an investment into the future, which would pay off.
"It's an opportunity for us to build on good existing relationships with airport users ... and a good chance to build new relationships with air service providers," said Mrs Cardno, who opened the airport on Saturday.
Tourist airline Pionair, the only large commercial user of the new airport, plans to increase services.
Chief executive Tim Scott said Pionair had enjoyed a good relationship with the Southland District Council for eight years and planned to bring in more than the current 70 tour groups a year in future.
The old airport facilities — little more than a shed — had been seen as cute by some visitors "but cute doesn't cut the mustard in the tourism business any more" .
The lengthened runway meant the company could now fly full planes out of Te Anau. Previously planes arrived full but had to take off empty, leaving groups to go on by coach. Now Pionair would be able to offer Te Anau people flights to Christchurch, Mr Scott said.

Lonnie Dalzell continues his great work as an Ambassador for the Futureintech Programme, facilitated by IPENZ (the Institute of Professional Engineers in New Zealand). As part of ongoing Ambassador visits to Dunedin schools, Lonnie visited Bayfield High School where he did some field demonstrations with a Total Station Survey Instrument. This practical demonstration was to show Year 12 students how trigonometry is used (in surveying) to calculate key measurements for project sites. Lonnie has also completed two presentations to Year 9 students at Kaikorai Valley High School; demonstrating how geometry is used in real world situations and careers. From these Ambassador visits it is hoped that students will see the practical end use of what they study at school, as well as considering engineering and surveying as their career choice and as the very interesting, stimulating and well rewarded careers that they are. |

JULY 2007 When Projenz turned ten years old this month we reflected on our rapid growth and origins; Between 1991 and 1997 John Penman and then Steve Borlase developed the successful Roading Group at Manukau Consultants Limited (MCL), with 65 staff, multiple long term contracts, regional offices and a revenue of $6m annually and in the process created some real resale share value for the original owners, Manukau City Council . Prior to the sale of MCL to the Australian company GHD in 1999, both John and Steve had determined that there was a real market opportunity to establish a new company that was focused on bringing a fresh approach to Professional Engineering in New Zealand. The company name Projenz was the brand chosen to represent Professional Engineering and Project Management Services of a wholly New Zealand owned consultancy. Wishing to expand on the successful business formula, in 2005 Projenz appointed Callum Wood as a co-director based in the Dunedin office heading the South Island operations. With offices now firmly established in Albany, Dunedin and Queenstown, Projenz are looking forward to future sustained growth in New Zealand and contributions to the continuing development of New Zealand projects and infrastructure. The team in Albany celebrated the 10th anniversary in style at the Spencer on Byron in Takapuna. |

ISO 9001:2001 Quality Certification The Projenz Business System: All Projenz company systems are now integrated under one umbrella to ISO 9001 standards. We have designed a unique ‘Projenz Business System” which includes all our business processes into one 4-part business Manual. These are:
One of the keys to the Projenz Business System is the adoption of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) from the balanced Scorecard Institute (BSI) in the USA. Refer www.balancedscorecard.org The BSC is a management system (not only a measurement system) that enables organizations to clarify their vision and strategy and translate them into action. It provides feedback around both the internal business processes and external outcomes in order to continuously improve strategic planning from an academic exercise into the nerve centre of an enterprise. Kaplan and Norton describe the innovation of the balanced scorecard as follows: “The balanced scorecard retains traditional financial measures. But financial measures tell the story of past events, an adequate story for industrial age companies for which investments in long term capabilities and customer relationships were not critical for success. These financial measures are inadequate, however, for guiding and evaluating the journey that information age companies must make to create future value through investment in customers, suppliers, employees, processes, technology and innovation.” The balanced scorecard suggests that we view the organization from four perspectives, and to develop metrics (measures), collect data and analyse it relative to each of these perspectives. |
